The April 2014 issue of The Legend continues this very special year for the GTOAA, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original American factory muscle car, the 1964 Pontiac GTO. On the cover of this month’s issue is Steve Schaeffer’s Grenadier Red (Code V) hardtop, which Steve has owned since 1971—43 years! The GTO came into his possession as “a tired old car,” albeit with a totally rust-free body, floors, and frame, that had been modified with a 1955 Chevy “long tail” three-speed transmisison and a “Mickey Mouse” shifter in a hacked-up console. After rebuilding the GTO as a C/Stock drag racer with a 348-hp tri-power engine and Muncie 4-speed, Hooker Headers, Crane Cam, seven-inch-wide cheater slicks, and a 3:90 rear, Steve spent the next few years collecting time slips and trophies. Later, he decided to restore the car as a resto-mod. Today, though she appears mostly stock, this Goat is equipped with a wide-ratio Muncie four-speed, Hurst Competition Plus shifter, Hayes 10.4-inch clutch, 3:36 rear gears, four-core radiator, Pypes 2.5-inch stainless steel exhaust, Edelbrock 750 CFM 4bbl. carb, power brakes, and a 0.60-over balanced 389 beefed up with screw-in rocker studs, pushrod guideplates, and Crane Fireball 290 cam. She’s fast and drives great, and is a proud, show-trophy-winning part of Steve’s collection, which also includes a 455-powered 1964 LeMans H.O., and two 1966 GTOs. All four Pontiacs are “in show condition and street-driven.”
Also in the April issue: “Convention Corner 2014” with John Owoc of the Greater Pittsburgh GTOAA Chapter; “A Special Holiday Club Meeting” (The one and only Mario Andretti—driving his 50th Anniversary Edition 2013 Lamborghini Murcielago—visits the GTO Association of Pennsylvania!) with Greg Serieco; “Pet Peeves from Arizona 2014” with The Legend Editor Tom “Spellcheck” Szymczyk; “Memories of Hurst Performance, Part 10” with Dennis Kirban; “Pontiac Historical Services Partners With Barrett-Jackson” with Jim Mattison; and “Goats On The Block” with Chuck Catalano.
